Michaelmas: courage beneath the quiet sword
On 29 September, the feast of Saint Michael invites us to meet strength as protection, clarity and the courage to stand for what is right.

Today is Saint Michael’s Day — Michaelmas — a feast placed at the threshold of autumn, when daylight begins to narrow and the human heart remembers its own lamp. It honours Archangel Michael, whose image has crossed centuries with wings, armour and a sword: symbols of protection, moral courage and the defence of what is just.
Christian traditions keep the day in slightly different ways. The Church of England marks 29 September as Michael and All Angels. In the Roman Catholic calendar, the same date celebrates the archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. One day therefore holds three movements of grace: Michael protects, Gabriel brings the message, and Raphael accompanies healing and the journey home.
Michael appears by name in the Book of Daniel as a great prince and protector. In the Revelation to John, Michael and his angels stand against the dragon. Sacred art later translated those passages into an instantly recognisable figure: a radiant guardian with a sword, shield or scales. The objects are visual language. The sword separates truth from confusion; the scales call for justice; the wings remind us that help may arrive from beyond the limits of ordinary sight.
Yet Michael’s deepest lesson is larger than battle. True protection does not need cruelty. A guardian’s strength is measured by what remains safe in their presence: the vulnerable person, the honest word, the boundary held with dignity, the small flame carried through a dark room.
That is why the sword in our Mystic Rose image points downward. It is ready, yet governed. Power serves peace. Courage stands awake without becoming rage. Michaelmas asks us to discover that same balance within ourselves — a clear mind, an open heart and a steady hand.
The day also carries a beautiful seasonal meaning. In older European life, Michaelmas stood near harvest and the turning of the year’s practical rhythms. Even now, it feels like a threshold: summer behind us, the deeper season ahead. We gather what has ripened, release what has ended and choose what deserves our protection.
Today, light a candle if you wish. Name one person, promise or piece of truth you will protect. Then name one fear you are ready to meet with calm. The prayer can be simple: may courage be clean, may strength be kind, and may every sword of light remember that its final purpose is peace.
